In a significant address at the 2026 IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings, Olayemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), underscored the importance of sustained macroeconomic stability and declining inflation as critical factors for attracting long-term investments into Nigeria. According to Cardoso, these elements are vital for boosting production and creating jobs in the country.
Cardoso, alongside Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, articulated that Nigeria's ongoing economic recovery presents substantial opportunities to deepen investor confidence and mobilize capital for productive activities. He stated, “The global economy has shown resilience in the face of fragmentation and significant headwinds, but the environment remains fragile. What is important for Nigeria is to sustain the progress we have made and create the conditions for private investment to flourish.”
Emphasizing the CBN's role, Cardoso affirmed that the bank would continue to implement policies aimed at restoring price stability, strengthening the foreign exchange market, and improving the economy's capacity to withstand external shocks. He remarked, “We are focused on price stability. Our decisions are data-dependent, and we will continue to communicate clearly so that businesses, households, and investors understand the direction of monetary policy.”
Furthermore, Cardoso noted that the recent decline in inflation provides a unique opportunity to recalibrate monetary policy while maintaining a sufficiently tight stance to consolidate the gains achieved. He expressed optimism that these efforts would not only stabilize the economy but also create a conducive environment for long-term investments, which are essential for Nigeria's economic growth.
