Canoe Transport Thrives at Ose-Okwodu Market in Onitsha Amid Economic Challenges — The Abuja Times Newsroom

At the bustling waterfront of Ose-Okwodu market in Onitsha, the canoe and boat transport business is witnessing a remarkable surge as young men seize the opportunity to thrive amidst Nigeria's economic difficulties. With the River Niger as a backdrop, the canoe park is perpetually busy, with paddlers and loaders engaged in brisk transactions, catering to travelers seeking a more affordable alternative to road transport.

Despite the prevalent economic downturn and the rising costs of education, many young men have chosen to embark on this water-based enterprise, viewing it as a viable means of sustaining their livelihoods. However, they reject the notion that this choice stems from a lack of options, asserting that their involvement in canoe paddling is a conscious decision rather than a desperate measure.

“We charge about N4,000 per passenger traveling from Onitsha in Anambra State to Kogi State,” said Friday Idakwo, a 20-year-old canoe paddler from Kogi State. “It is cheaper and safer for travelers to go by canoe or boat than to travel by road.”

While concerns about safety in water transport persist, the paddlers argue that the risks are exaggerated. They maintain that as long as travelers wear life jackets and possess basic swimming skills, the likelihood of accidents is minimal. Unlike road transport, which is fraught with dangers such as accidents and kidnappings, the canoe service offers a more secure and economical means of travel.

The growth of the canoe business not only highlights the resilience and adaptability of the youth in the face of economic hardship but also underscores a shift in transportation preferences among local travelers. As the canoe paddling community continues to flourish, it serves as a reminder of the innovative ways in which individuals are navigating the challenges posed by Nigeria's current economic landscape.
