Akwa Ibom Government Launches Initiative to Combat Truancy and School Dropouts
In a bid to address increasing truancy and school non-enrollment, the Akwa Ibom government is establishing a special task force aimed at intercepting loitering students. This initiative comes amid rising concerns regarding the educational outcomes in the state.
The Abuja Times

The Akwa Ibom State government has announced plans to form a dedicated task force designed to tackle the growing issues of truancy, street hawking, and school non-enrollment among students. As educational outcomes come under scrutiny, this initiative aims to ensure that children receive the necessary education and are not found idling on the streets.
Authorities in Akwa Ibom have acknowledged that the increasing number of students loitering during school hours poses significant challenges to the educational system. The proposed task force will work closely with schools, parents, and community leaders to monitor and address these issues effectively.
In a statement, the state’s Commissioner for Education emphasized the importance of parental involvement in ensuring that children attend school regularly. “Parents must take responsibility for their children’s education and ensure they are in school instead of wandering the streets,” the Commissioner stated. This call for parental engagement highlights the collaborative effort needed to improve educational attendance.
The initiative also plans to provide support for students who may be involved in street hawking, aiming to create an environment where education is prioritized. By intercepting students who are not in school, the government hopes to not only enhance their educational prospects but also discourage the practice of street hawking, which often disrupts learning.
As the government moves forward with these plans, the community’s response will be crucial in shaping the future of education in Akwa Ibom. Stakeholders are urged to participate actively in this initiative to foster a culture of learning and accountability.
