Political activist Aisha Yesufu asserts that supporters of Peter Obi will take proactive measures to ensure their votes are protected in the upcoming 2027 presidential election, citing a lack of trust in electoral institutions. Aisha Yesufu, a prominent political activist and member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has voiced strong concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process for the 2027 presidential election. In a recent interview on Arise News, she articulated that supporters of Peter Obi, the party's presidential candidate, will not place their trust solely in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to safeguard their votes. Instead, they plan to implement a strategy that involves deploying representatives to polling units across the country.
Reflecting on the lessons learned from the 2023 elections, Yesufu highlighted the necessity for voters and political groups to actively participate in monitoring election proceedings. “Yes, we are going to have people at every polling unit to protect the votes,” she stated, emphasizing the commitment to closely observe the movement of election materials and the tallying of results through various collation centers all the way to Abuja.
According to Yesufu, this proactive approach is aimed at ensuring that the results declared by INEC accurately reflect the votes cast by Nigerians. “No result sheet will leave our sight. We will follow the results from the polling units all the way to Abuja,” she declared, underscoring the determination of Obi's supporters to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
Her remarks also indicated a profound skepticism towards the electoral body and other institutions involved in the electoral process. She expressed having “zero trust” in INEC, security agencies, and the judiciary, stressing that citizens cannot afford to leave the protection of their votes entirely to these entities. This sentiment resonates with many voters who have grown disillusioned with electoral integrity in Nigeria.
As the 2027 election approaches, Aisha Yesufu's call to action reflects a growing movement among Nigerian citizens to take control of the electoral process, ensuring that their voices are not only heard but also counted accurately during elections.
