AAC Takes Legal Action Against Tinubu Over Power Transfer Issues
The African Action Congress (AAC), led by Omoyele Sowore, has filed a lawsuit against President Bola Tinubu and others, claiming a constitutional violation regarding the transfer of power to Vice President Kashim Shettima during the president's recent vacation. The African Action Congress (AAC), under the leadership of Omoyele Sowore, has initiated legal proceedings against President Bola Tinubu, alleging a serious breach of constitutional protocol regarding the transfer of power to Vice President Kashim Shettima. The lawsuit stems from Tinubu's failure to officially transmit power to Shettima while he vacationed in Europe from August 30 to September 28, which the AAC claims is a gross violation of democratic principles.
In the court documents, the AAC contends that the president's inaction during his absence not only undermines the rule of law but also poses a risk to national governance. They argue that the Constitution mandates such a transfer of power whenever the president is unable to perform his duties, thereby emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency in the highest office of the land.
“The failure to transmit power is undemocratic and a gross violation of the Constitution,” stated Sowore, calling for the court to recognize the constitutional implications of the presidency's actions.
This legal challenge comes at a time when Nigeria is navigating various political challenges, and it underscores the ongoing tensions between the ruling party and opposition groups. The AAC's bold move is seen as part of a broader strategy to hold the administration accountable and ensure that democratic norms are upheld.
As this case progresses through the courts, it will likely attract significant public and media attention, further fueling the debate about governance and constitutional adherence in Nigeria. The outcome could have lasting implications for the relationship between the presidency and the vice presidency, as well as for the political landscape as a whole.
